Lebanon has no unified civil personal status code; marriage is governed entirely by 15 separate religious confessional courts. For Muslims, Sunni and Shia courts operate autonomously. In Sunni courts (Hanafi tradition), an adult woman may contract independently or through a Wali; in Ja’fari courts, the father’s consent is customary for virgins while independent capacity applies to mature, self-reliant women. Many Lebanese interfaith or secular couples marry civilly abroad (in Cyprus or Turkey) and register the foreign deed in Beirut.

Lebanese society pairs cosmopolitan sophistication with regional and family solidarity. Introductions often occur through universities or professional life, followed by formal home visits where parents evaluate lifestyle compatibility, professional prospects, and religious devotion.
