Senegal harmonizes French civil law with deeply rooted Islamic and customary traditions. Under the Code de la Famille of 1972, couples must register their union at the municipal civil registry (Mairie). At the moment of registration, the couple makes a legally binding declaration choosing either a strictly monogamous regime or an option for polygyny (up to 4 wives). The religious ceremony (Takku Sey) is officiated by an Islamic cleric or family Marabout.

Senegalese society is steeped in Sufi spiritual traditions (chiefly the Muridiyya and Tijaniyya brotherhoods). Matrimonial proposals begin with the presentation of sacred kola nuts (Goro) to elders and mosque leaders. Distributing kola nuts serves as the sacred, public announcement of betrothal.
